25 Years of Ice: Gala Celebration & Fundraiser

The evening opened outside. The Palouse Highlanders piped guests in from the parking lot, under the rink’s new sign. Inside, the silent auction tables filled with quilts and artwork, honey and gift baskets, yoga classes and a healing sound bath. Martin Watkinson played cello beside the parked Zamboni — his parents played our opening day in 2001. There was time before dinner to wander, bid, and find old friends. Guests climbed onto the Zamboni for photographs, or stuck their heads through the cutouts to become a figure skating duo, or a pair of hockey players mid-scrap.

Lisa Fournier hosted while a delicious dinner was served. Tony Mangini spoke about how the rink came to exist and why this night matters — we carry debt, and maintenance is not a someday problem. Erik Jacobson premiered The Miracle of Ice, a film about the good fortune of having ice in our town.

Then Kyle Pea took the podium for the live auction — desserts, kayaks, Kraken tickets, three nights on Lake Coeur d’Alene — while Lisa worked the crowd with silver pom poms, egging people on and dancing the room into a laughter-filled frenzy. Between the bidders and the businesses and individuals who donated what was on the block, the 2026 gala raised more than any gala before it. Thank you, Palouse Ice Rink community!

Saturday–Sunday, September 26th–27th

Two days built entirely around the position: 7.5 hours of ice, 2 hours of chalk talk, and a yoga session. Saturday lunch included. $300, and genuinely open to all ages, genders, and skill levels — first-year goalies and veterans both.

Learn to Skate

For anyone who has never been on ice, and for beginning skaters who want to learn more. Classes follow the USFS Basic Skills curriculum, are grouped by age and ability, and run in sessions of six. It’s the doorway to everything else here — figure skating, hockey, speed skating.

Figure Skating

The Palouse Hills Skating Club calls PIR home, and welcomes skaters from beginner through competitive. Membership includes discounted USFS membership, Skating magazine, access to club ice at rinks around the country, insurance, and the chance to compete and perform.

PIR also hosts dedicated figure skating sessions open to the public — good for practice, private lessons, or a first look at the sport. Private and small-group lessons are available during those sessions; contact a coach directly to arrange one.

Adult Hockey League Registration Is Open

Curling

Curling is one of the Palouse’s best-kept secrets. Two teams take turns sliding 42-pound granite stones toward a circular target called the house — part strategy, part precision, entirely addictive. It’s an Olympic sport, a lifelong sport, and one of the most welcoming rooms at the rink. First-timers are genuinely welcome; no experience needed.

Weekly curling, Learn-to-Curl clinics, and tournaments run through the season. Kids are welcome too — we have smaller stones. The Palouse Curling Club posts schedules and clinic dates on Facebook, or email curlingclubpalouse@gmail.com to get started.
