Come to as many or as few as you like — the sessions build on each other, but you’re welcome to jump in at any point.
What to Expect
Chalk Talks cover the things nobody explains once you’re already on the ice. Topics include:
- Getting geared up — what to buy, what it costs, and where to get it
- Terminology and etiquette — the language of the game and the unwritten rules of the locker room and bench
- Rules and positions — how the game is structured and where you’re supposed to be
- Fitness and nutrition for hockey
- Breakouts, regroups, and basic attacking strategy
Bring your questions — the sessions are built around them, and you’ll hear from several different coaches and players rather than one voice.
The on-ice Try Hockey dates put it into practice at a beginner’s pace, with coaches and experienced players there to help. All PIR adult hockey is non-checking, and no slapshots are allowed at any level.
What About Gear?
Don’t let equipment stop you from coming. Skates are provided if you need them, and between our loaner stock and the league’s players we can usually get a newcomer outfitted for a Try Hockey session. What’s available beyond skates varies, so email adulthockey@palouseicerink.com before your first on-ice date and let us know your size. We’ll tell you what we can cover and what to bring.
Helmets should be hockey helmets, ideally with a cage or visor for face protection. We may be able to loan you one — ask when you email, and we’ll sort it out with you.
Gear is also a Chalk Talk topic, so if you’d rather ask in person before getting on the ice, start there.
What Comes Next
Once you’ve got the fundamentals, the next step is the Emerald (C) League — the Palouse Adult League‘s beginner division, where ice time is a mix of games and practices and the whole point is developing new players. You don’t need to be good yet. You just need to be started.
