The ice rink can be a great place to learn about science.
Students can learn about the properties of water — how a Zamboni smooths the ice. They can put Newton’s second law of motion to practice — using a slingshot to slide different size hockey pucks across the ice to see firsthand how the different masses of the puck change the distance it will travel.
Students from Whitefish Middle School recently got the chance to spend some time at the Stumptown Ice Den learning about science and also doing a little ice- skating through the Science on Ice program.

Despite the rumors, the rink is standing firm. It is only the smaller joining front edge that was blown off, but this can be repaired and does not impact the ability to use the facility. We have ice, and we can't wait to see YOU come skate on it!

We opened our doors for business on Monday afternoon and have been happy to see so many new and long-time community members and visitors come to skate (and just hang out!). Already this week, we've had some youth "Learn to Play Hockey" sessions; several youth hockey practices (PYHA and the Polar Bears!); the WSU and UofI women's hockey team practices; "Old Timers" hockey; two 5th-grade classes came together for the popular, "Science on Ice" program; and of course, lots of public skating!
Saturday will be busy, as the first session for the "Learn to Skate" program will take place, as well as a Referee clinic. Everyone else is asked to come and participate in the UofI Homecoming parade. (Parade starts at 10 a.m.; please meet at 9:15 a.m. near the Habitat for Humanity Resale Store and Dutch Bros. For more info, please contact Joanne Tirocke by email at firstname.lastname@example.org.)
On Sunday, there will be a special, "Learn to Curl" session, and figure skating sessions will begin!
There's something for everyone! We can't wait to see YOU on the ice!

Keep checking the website, as the schedules will be out soon!
10 October 2015
Over the past few days, several of us have been working diligently to get the rink ready for the coming season. After a few mechanical and supply setbacks, the chiller is now running, and the process of cooling down the floor is taking place. The anticipated warmer weather may pose a bit of a challenge; however, it is yet to be determined how it will affect the plan. Please continue to check the website for the most up-to-date information on our progress.
All of us at the Palouse Ice Rink appreciate your patience and understanding as we move forward and get things underway. It won’t be long now, and remember...
We can't wait to see YOU on the ice!
